5th & 6th June 2010, Queen’s Birthday Weekend
Race Location – Collingwood – Golden Bay
You will need a crew to assist you during this years event. Minimum is 1 person.
The Team formats.
Rollo’s Nelson Adventure Race 24 (AR24) & 12 (AR12) – 2 & 4 person teams
The 4 person teams must have a minimum of 1 person or the opposite gender, however I will allow 4 woman & 4 men who are all over 50 years young.
The 2 person teams can be either, man or woman & mixed.
Rollo’s Nelson Adventure Duathlon Race 24 (AD24) & 12 (AD12) – 2, 3 & 4 person teams
The teams can be either, man or woman & mixed.
RULES & REGULATIONS
The Race
The course will be issued in stages during the event, you will be told the start location and discipline at the race briefing by the Race Director.
Race registration time to be advised.
The race start will be 8.00am Saturday 5th June 2010 in Collingwood.
The RNAR24 race will take between 16 to 24 hours (depends on how fast the leaders travel) and RNAR12 will take between 10 & 14 hours. Both will involve kayaking, running/ trekking, navigation, orienteering style activites, coasteering and mountain biking.
The route of the race may be added to, modified or cancelled at any moment by the organisers due to bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Competitors must follow the course and any alternatives designed by the organisers and must comply with the spirit of the competition.
Team members must travel within 100 metres of each other.
Checkpoints and Transition areas
The course has manned and remote checkpoints situated on it which teams must pass through together as a whole team.
Event officials will man the checkpoints and will be in radio contact with the event headquarters.
Checkpoints and transition areas will be indicated as grid references.
Grid references will be provided with the stage notes.
It will be your responsibility to mark your maps. You will be required to provide your own maps.The map number is Collingwood NZTopo50-BN24.
The transition area is where teams meet their support crew and could change disciplines.
Each team member must be present at all checkpoints.
Cut-off times & Alternative courses
We will have cut-off times on the course. If a team reaches a checkpoint after a certain time they will be directed onto an alternative route to enable them to cross the finish line.
The Team
As a team you will be required to navigate using a topographical map during the day and night in any weather conditions on tracked & untracked terrain, be able to apply basic first aid, know how to swim and be confident while paddling your kayak in rivers, sea and surf conditions.
Teams must carry or wear all of their own compulsory personal equipment and the team first aid kit at all times and each disciplines team equipment as required.
Race Bibs must be worn at all times and are to be worn over life jackets and under packs & jackets.
Bibs must be return at the finish line.
Each competitor enters under their own responsibility.
The competitor alone is the sole judge to whether they should participate and agrees to enter at their own risk.
The organiser’s reserves the right to withdraw, forbid any competitor or team from setting off or continuing the course.
The organiser’s and sponsor’s are not responsible for the behaviour of the competitors or their support crew.
Assistants
Assistants will support their team and are responsible for the transport of the required equipment to the different checkpoints. They can not communicate with their team in any way outside of the transition areas. This means Texting, while it’s hard to police i would like you all to refer to the Spirit of Competition and we may assk to check your cell phone. Assistance to the teams is only allowed within the transition area. Assistants will have to carry sleeping bags and provide food and drink for both the team and themselves during the event.
Race Registration
At race registration, there will be a minimum gear inspection in order for the organisers to certify that every team meets the requirements of the race regulations along with a liability wavier which is to be signed by the team captain and the teams assistants names and contact cellphone number is to be given.
You will need to bring the following compulsory gear with you to the event. There will be no gear check before the race other than the requested items that you will be told about a week before the race. There will be spot checks on the course. If you are unsure about your gear please ask. It is your responsibility to ensure that YOUR equipment is up to the manufacturers standard.
Compulsory Equipment – Rollo’s Nelson Adventure Race 2010:
Lifejackets – will be required for coasteering.
Spray-skirts, (not required for Adventure Duathlon)
Double Kayak, (not required for Adventure Duathlon)
1 Smoke Flare per kayak, (not required for Adventure Duathlon)
Kayak Flag per kayak, (not required for Adventure Duathlon)
Cycle helmets (NZ standards approved), cycle gloves and front & rear bike lights.
Kayak Helmet – a cycyle helmet will be acceptable.
Compulsory Team equipment:
First Aid Kit (suitable to apply basic first aid)
First Aid kit contents will be checked and must contain strapping tape and insect sting medication. 2 are required per 4 person team.
Compass (Southern Hemisphere)
MAP – Collingwood NZTopo50-BN24
Cellphone in a waterproof bag.
1 Sleeping Bag – minimum 1 season.
1 dry bag big enough to keep the sleeping bag dry.
1 foam pad/thermarest – minimum size 1200 x 500mm.
Waterproof tent fly – 3m x 3m minimum.
1 glow stick per competitor.
1 spare head lamp and batteries.
1 knife.
Personal equipment:
Survival blanket.
Polypropylene long sleeve top & long legged bottoms.
Fleece or woollen hat and gloves.
Fleece top – 100 weight minimum.
Whistle.
Waterproof jacket & Waterproof over trousers.
Headlamp and sufficient batteries.
All compulsory equipment can be carried or worn. There will be gear checks on the course.
Kayak
Any type of double kayak can be used. No single Kayak’s allowed.
Paddle a kayak that suits your team’s skills.
Life jackets and spray-skirts must be worn and fitted correctly.
Life jackets must have minimum buoyancy of 6.2kg.
Kayak Helmet or Cycle Helmet.
Consider using poggies.
Teams must paddle together.
Practise paddling in all conditions. Sea, Surf, Swell & Windy.
The kayak section will only be altered if the conditions cause issues for the safety support vessels.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikes must be road worthy.
You will require lights for night riding and a rear red strobe light.
Cycle helmets and gloves must be worn at all times while mountain biking.
All mechanical problems are to be handled by the competitors, or the assistants at transition areas.
You must obey the road rules at all times.
Practise night riding!!
There will be no closed roads. Treat all roads as open and you must obey the road rules at all times.
Trekking/ Running
Be prepared to trek on all types of terrain, tracked and untracked.
Food and Drink
You must carry your own food and drink at all times during the event.
There will be no drink stations on the course.
Timing
At each transition and checkpoint your times will be recorded and when your team crosses the finish line.
Your placing will be based on finish line times.
The winning team will be the first whole team to have completed the entire race in the shortest time. (As long as they didn’t infringe the race rules and regulations)
All team members must be present at all checkpoints and transitions.
Time penalties/Disqualification
Disqualification will occur for:
Unfair behaviour.
Unauthorised equipment use. No GPS allowed.
Abandoning of a team member during a section of the race.
Abandoning team equipment on the course.
Non-assistance to a person or persons in distress or danger.
Assistance outside of transition areas.
Unauthorised use of cellphones or communication outside of transition areas.
Time penalty will occur for:
Not carrying or wearing compulsory equipment.
Missing checkpoints.
Breaching the rules and regulations of the event.
These lists is not exhaustive.
Any time penalty may result in a team being unranked.
Protests
The race jury will view any legitimate protest. All protests must be filed in writing with the race organisers within one hour
of finishing the race.
Withdrawal
In case of withdrawal of a competitor or the entire team the team captain must inform the nearest checkpoint in the shortest possible time. Once withdrawn they must stay out of the race.
The race organisers are not responsible for a team/competitor who has withdrawn.
Your team can continue in the race without a team member, however you will be un-ranked
Liability Wavier
All competitors and their supporters agree to compete at their own risk and waive liability against the race organisers, race officials, landowners and sponsors for personal injury, death, loss of personal equipment, or damage to 3rd party property that may result as a consequence of my involvement in this event.
A liability wavier has to be signed by the team captain before you are able to start the race.
Competitors should ensure that they are adequately insured.
Race Cancellation
Should unforeseen circumstances cause the cancellation of the event, no refunds will be given.
